Adding New Team Members — Be A Mystery Shopper

I need to know how to start planning an orientation program for new employees in our HR Department knowing that I will start from a blank page since it has never done before.

The Team Doc Says…

Don’t do this in a vacuum. What you think everyone needs may not be enough, or may be too much. Take some time to conduct interviews with new hires and veterans alike to find out exactly what they would like to know as a new member of your team.

Then do some mystery shopping. It may be tough if you’ve been there for a while, but walk through your company like you’ve never been there before. Open your eyes and your mind to what is happening around you — in each and every department — and jot down everything you discover. Don’t analyze what you’re doing as you do it. There’s plenty of time for that later.

Once you’ve completed your interviews and your mystery shop, take all the data you’ve gathered and find similar groupings. You should end up with a framework of themes to build your orientation program around.
