Changing Team Culture More Than A Training Class

by Denise O'Berry

Suggestions are needed to help change the mind-set of employees who feel their pay increases, bonuses, and workload are based on their senority and who they know in the organization. This culture of entitlement is coming to an end when the new pay for performance system is introduced in January. The plan is to introduce the new performance system as part of a training class on teamwork. I am looking for an exercise, case study, video, etc. to make the point that performance will be rewarded and lack of peformance will be swiftly and fairly dealt with.

The Team Doc Says…

I think you are going to be very disappointed on January 1 when the culture does not instantly change. You cannot change culture with one training class on teamwork.

It takes consistent, demonstrated behavior to change culture and some of the toughest to change are the ones at the top — the leaders.

Let’s face it. You are dealing with humans here. Adult humans I suspect. Humans don’t like to change even if the current system is horrible. It’s a comfort issue.

I hope that you have planned for employee involvement and have a long-term communication plan to help you with these changes to your organization. If you don’t, the change will end up as the “management flavor of the week” like so many other business changes.

Best regards,

Denise O’Berry
