Hi! I’m Your New Team Member — What Now?

by Denise O'Berry

How do I integrate with an already established team? How do I approach the team members?

The Team Doc Says…

I’m sorry you even had to ask this question. There is absolutely no reason why a new team member to an existing team should have to take measures to integrate themselves into the team.

Every team should have a process for bringing new team members on board. In addition to a team manual that the new team member should be provided, there should be processes and procedures like mentoring a new team member, shadowing members on the team, ” buddying up” within existing member so a new team member can learn the ropes.

But none of that helps you much, does it? Your best bet at this point in time is to schedule some one-on-one time with each team member to find out more about what they do and how you can help them. Make sure you seize every opportunity to be involved in what the team is doing. It would also be a good idea to seek out your team leader and ask for advice and assistance on the best ways to integrate with the team and become a valued member. Each time team members are discussing a problem, creating a solution, making decisions, or creating an action plan for results, make sure you are part of that process.
