How to Check Team Body Language That Doesn’t Match The Words

by Denise O'Berry

The team looks okay, however the body language is displaying some discomfort. How do I address that?

The Team Doc Says…

The best way to address body language that doesn’t seem to match what is being said in your team is to explicity ask about it.

Here are some suggestions:

  • You look a bit confused, is there something I can clarify for you?
  • It seems there might be a question about this issue. How can I help?

  • You’re saying yes, but your body language is telling me something different. Am I confused or do you have an issue with this discussion?

These examples should give you an idea of where to start to get clarification from your team members about the body language mismatch. Perhaps there is nothing going on, but if you don’t ask, they won’t tell. :-)

The key to remember when you are questioning the team members is to word your question from an “I want to understand better” perspective, not a “You’re not telling me the truth” perspective. That will open up a discussion and help you figure out what is going on.
