Jumping In As Leader Of An Existing Team

by Denise O'Berry

I have just started a new position as support IT manager. Some of my employees have been coworkers and others I’m not familiar with. I need to do a performance review for each member but I’m not sure how to approach the feedback if I’ve never seen them perform. How would you approach this situation?

The Team Doc Says…

Put the burden on them. Advise each employee that you would like to know more about what they have accomplished over the past X months. Ask them what achievement they are most proud of and, if they had a project to do over again, which one would it be and why.

Getting this information from them will give you a good bit of insight into what they value, their strengths and weaknesses. You can use this information as a starting point for a discussion.

And begin with this team on the right foot. Right now, start giving regular feedback to team members as you see tasks and activities accomplished.
