Does anyone have a standard communication they use to convey the expectation of appropriate business-like conduct even at company social events? We have the alcohol aspect covered and I am not referring to events with clients. But how do other companies address the expectation that employees are expected to conduct themselves modestly and not to ‘go wild’ just because the event is social in nature such as a BBQ or an after-hours, business sponsored event?
The Team Doc Says…
You’d think this would be common sense, but common sense doesn’t always mean common practice. There always seems to be at least one person who doesn’t “get” the fact that they are at a company function.
First you want to make absolutely sure that leadership team members are conducting themselves properly. Remember that team members of your organization watch what they do not necessarily what they say.
Given that, rather than lock the entire organization down in a policy or procedure that may just stifle them, have a one-on-one discussion with the offending party. Remind them of the code of conduct of your company. (You do have one, don’t you?) And make sure on each and every invitation to this type of event that there is a reminder about it being a company function.
