Need New Team Member Strategy For Integrating Into Existing Team

by Denise O'Berry

I have joined a new team and have had to build new relationships. What approach should I take? How can I help the team to achieve its aims and objectives?

The Team Doc Says…

Congratulations on your new position! Hopefully the team has been doing its fair share at integrating you into their team activities. It is a good idea for you to do your share of this too.

First, make sure you are up to speed on the teams goals and objectives. Then make a list of the tasks that could benefit from your expertise. Take some time to also jot down your strengths and where you think you can add value to the team.

Next, set up short meetings with each of the team members. You can do this informally or formally — make sure you mirror the style of your team — and spend only 15 to 30 minutes.

As you meet with each team member, listen well. Ask them what’s most important to them in their work and the activities they accomplish toward the team goals and objectives. After you’ve found out clues to how your teammate works, offer up how you can help. Point out specific tactics that relate to what they are doing and explain how you can add value. Weave your strengths into this discussion too.

Start doing this now and you’ll soon find yourself a valued and useful member of the team.
