Failing Team Needs a Morale Boost

by Denise O'Berry

How do I help improve the morale of the team after several failures?

The Team Doc Says…

I can’t imagine that your team is a failure at everything. Perhaps you mean the team has failed at the last few major projects. That can be demoralizing. To detemine where the team went astray, try doing an after action review.

What you need to do is help them see their small successes along the way to the final goal. What typically happens when teams get together is that within seconds the discussion turns to what’s wrong. Don’t allow this to happen.

Focus on the positive by having regular meetings with the team to discuss what successes have happened that week. Acknowledge even the smallest success to eventually get to the larger ones. Until your team has a culture of recognizing even the tiniest successes and recognizing them as a step in reaching the goal, they will continue with their low morale.
