How To Adjust The Team When Workload Is Heavy

by Denise O'Berry

The team you run is fully loaded and working an agreed level of overtime. One of the top ten managed accounts that provide a base load for the company at low profit levels has won a large export order and need to pull forward demand for parts that affect all areas of the company. Explain how you would handle this extra requirements through your area and what you would take into consideration.

The Team Doc Says…

Interesting question. To resolve this issue, maintain customer service and profitability, the first thing I would do is assemble a cross functional team from all areas of the company. This team would be provided with the purpose of solving this problem — quickly — and would be empowered with decision making authority to get it done.

The team members on your front line who do the day-to-day work are the ones with the answers. Sometimes they don’t know that and aren’t given the benefit of the doubt to make things happen.

The cross functional team approach serves a multi purpose. It solves the problem and is owned by the team members who will be responsible for carrying it out.
