It’s Not The Number That Matters

by Denise O'Berry

How does an organization determine what an appropriate number of teams are? Is there a limit? How do you determine that limit?

The Team Doc Says…

Many organizations ask the same thing. I’m glad you asked before you started creating your teams.

The key to effective teams is to remember it’s not the number that counts. It’s the purpose of each team that’s important. Not all things are meant to be accomplished by teams.

Identify the why’s for your initiative. The answers will provide you with how many teams you will need. Ask, “Why will this team exist? What is its purpose?” Each team must be able to focus on the purpose of their existence so they can develop goals and accomplish tasks around that purpose.
