Motivating Team With Constant Turnover Problem

Because of our local economy, the transient nature of our workforce, our position on the local pay curve, we deal with high turnover on a constant basis. This began about three years ago. I’m trying to help our team leaders and team managers find ways to motivate our team members to improve performance and attendance. What works?

The Team Doc Says…

What changed three years ago to trigger this phenomenon in your company? If you find the source of the problem, you can implement changes to turn it around. I don’t think motivation is the issue. It may be a symptom.

You need to start at the beginning and take a look at the entire culture of the business in addition to reviewing and modifying your hiring practices. I know I don’t have to tell you that the high turnover is causing your company huge bucks. It’s incredibly expensive to hire and lose team members.

Start at the top of the leadership scale. What’s happening there that dribbles down to the workforce and could be a contributing factor to your team turnover? Do team members feel cared for? Are they just a number “passing through” your company on their way to somewhere else? Has leadership given up? You leadership sets the tone for the organization (not what they say, but what they do). Spend time looking for ties from what is done at the leadership level to what is happening on the front line and I believe you’ll find the answer.
