Overcoming Weak Leadership

by Denise O'Berry

I recently took a new job. After being with the company for only 4 months, I’ve found that there are horrendous bad attitudes among all the managers! The primary reason seems to be one manager that the owner places enormous trust in. The problem is that the “bad” manager isn’t trustworthy, in fact, he’s a big troublemaker. He will do anything to look good in the owners eyes, at anyone’s expense. My job directly intertwines with this bad manager so I am constantly being challenged. I’m not complaining about my situation, just asking for advice on how to deal with someone who has a huge ego, is counter productive in the company yet has the owner fooled 100%. Any advice for me?

The Team Doc Says…

This issue is a tough one. If you plan on staying with this company, you need to make sure that your bases are covered and that you have an opportunity to speak for yourself so this manager is not “speaking for you.” One of the best things you can do — with some risk if you’re willing to take it — is to speak up on other team members behalf.

Don’t turn a blind eye to what is happening. It sounds like that’s what has been happening at this company. One person can only get away with something if others let him do it. Many of us allow ourselves to be victims rather than standing up, taking responsibility and doing the right thing to make our work environment better.

I’m glad you are looking for answers. That’s a step in the right direction. When at all possible, make sure you have the owners direct ear and have an opportunity to provide solutions to issues. That will help you build trust and give you more leverage as you work with this company.

Best regards,
