Stumped on Direction for Team Leaders

My company is looking at developing a program to speed the development of potential leaders within the organization. Although there have only been preliminary discussions thus far, the president is looking for a type of leadership “boot camp.” Something intensive, that will speed up the development of future leaders’ interpersonal and fundamental business skills.

The Team Doc Says…

A boot camp is a good way to start the process. In order to sustain learning and growth of the participants, you will need an ongoing program. This could be in the form of additional training, professional coaching, mentoring, etc.

I designed a leadership program for one of our clients that’s proven very successful. The program lasts for eight months. The leadership attends a two-hour session every two weeks where fundamental principals are taught and issues are discussed. Participants keep a journal that identifies personal growth goals, objectives and specific ‘take aways’ to apply on the job. The course includes reading different books and ‘homework’ between sessions to maintain the continuity.

Perhaps this type of training program will work with your leadership. Whatever you do, remember that training and development is not an event, it’s a process.
