Why Should Team Goals Support Organizational Goals?

Why is it important for team goals to reflect organisation goals?

The Team Doc Says…

If you think about business at its base level, the team would not exist if the business did not exist. The only reason the team survives is because the business survives.

For that reason, team goals support the vision, mission and goals of the organization.

Here’s the hierarchy.

Organization Vision –> Organization Mission –> Organization Goals –> Department Goals –> Team Goals

An organization should determine its objectives which is something toward which effort is directed, an aim, or end of action in general terms. Based on those objectives, goals should be set using the SMART format.

SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Results-Oriented, and Time-activated

  • Specific – What needs to be done? What results do you want? Is it clearly defined?
  • Measurable – How will you know whether the goal has been met? Can the results be quantified?
  • Attainable – Can objectives pertaining to the goal be carried out? In what manner will they be carried out? Is the goal possible to achieve? What are the forces at play that will help or hinder the accomplishment of the goal? Are there hindrances that are insurmountable?
  • Results-Oriented – What is the desired outcome? What should it look like when we’ve achieved it?
  • Time-Activated – When should the goal be completed?

Then action plans should be created to accomplish the goals. These steps should be taken at each hierarchical level of the organization.
