Team Members Make Promise, But No Action

by Denise O'Berry

Here’s my problem. Team members agree to take on certain tasks during the meeting, then they walk out the door and everything’s forgotten. What can I do to help people remember their action items and follow through on them?

The Team Doc Says…

That’s one of the main reasons most team members hate meetings — they feel like the time is wasted since no one follows up.

But it’s not the meetings that are the problem. It’s the people.

Make sure and document action items — what, who, when — during the team meeting. Then at the end of the meeting do a recap. After the meeting, notes are sent out with the action item list.

It will help your team keep track of all that needs to be done and assist in holding team members accountable.

Dear Teamdoc,
My team is completely out of control. I feel like the movie “Remember the Titans” BEFORE Denzel made a breakthru…The African Americans point the fingers at the Caucasions, the Caucasions point the finger at the Hispanics, the Hispanics point the finger back at the African Americans..it is a vicious circle, and working at a hotel we should all be on the same page and service based attitudes. Their attitude, guests dont see me, therefore I don’t have to “WOW!” them. HELP!!!

Randi — I am assuming based on your wording that this team works for you. That means the buck stops with you. Start taking action on the behavior you are seeing in your team. If you have major conflicts, use this process — http://www.askteamdoc.com/how-to-facilitate-a-conflict-between-two-team-members/
