Team Won’t Do If You Just Say

This may make you laugh, but I really would like suggestions about how to handle. We have a female employee who likes to run around the office in her bare feet! Her manager and I are somewhat at a loss as to what angle to use to get her to wear shoes outside of her cube. Of course, our president sometimes does the same – I know, that makes it especially difficult to discipline, but I’d appreciate any ideas.

The Team Doc Says…

Until the president demonstrates that it is not OK to run around the office barefooted, you will have a tough time taking care of this issue. It really is a classic case of “do as I say, not as I do.”

Sure, you can create a dress code policy that states everyone must wear shoes at all times and then you can discipline the team member, but why bother?

The president of the company is sending the strongest message of all. Until you can convince her that it is not OK and how it is impacting the workforce and your credibility, you’re stuck.

Frankly, I’d rather see you have a discussion with the president than the team member. How about it?
