Trust Key To Team Building

by Denise O'Berry

How does trust and empathy fit into team building in an organization?

The Team Doc Says…

Trust is a critical element that drives every facet of your organization. If team members don’t trust you, it will cause all sorts of problems. When you have strong trust in an organization it shows in open communication, employee engagement, employee productivity and ultimately the bottom line.

Sadly, organizations in the US have created an environment of mistrust through managing by layoff rather than managing the business. This has created an “I’ll watch my back, you worry about yours” culture in many companies. It’s impossible for trust to exist in that type of company.

And, yes, empathy definitely has a key role in building teams in an organization. Remember we are dealing with people here. As much as the experts stress to “leave home at the door,” the reality is that people bring outside issues to work. Being empathetic helps the team member understand that someone cares. That caring will translate to better employee engagement and productivity.
